Last updated Sep 27, 2023

While weaves are incredibly beautiful and they can enhance your appearance, you still need to take care of your natural hair underneath the weave. One of the most common mistakes people tend to make when wearing a weave is neglecting their hair. This is a mistake that can cost them a lot. You will not only end up with smelly hair, but you will deny your hair the chance to grow healthily. Additionally, you may end up with a tangled weave.

You can eliminate all these problems by properly washing your hair. But how do I wash my hair while in sew-in weave? You may be wondering. Well, keep on reading this article as we discuss how you can wash your hair while in a weave.

What are sew-in weaves?

What are sew-in weaves?

Sew-ins are a form of weave for the hair that is sewed into the hair instead of gluing it onto the scalp. If you would want to wear a sew-in as you transition to wigs, you would want to wear one that covers your entire hair, leaving no visible hair. This will also save you from having to worry about having to find a sew-in that matches your natural hair color, texture, and type.

The benefits of wearing sew-in weaves

  • They are affordable compared to wigs
  • They are durable, especially human hair weaves
  • They require minimal maintenance
  • They are more secure since they are sewn onto the hair
  • Human hair weaves are more natural
  • You don’t have to worry about reinstalling your sew-in because once it is sewn in, it can last for up to two months before removing it.
  • They can help add volume and length to your natural hair.

How to wash hair under sew-in weaves Step by Step?

Here are steps to help you maintain your hair’s cleanliness while wearing a weave. Before we delve into these steps, let’s list some of the things you will need.

You will need:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Clips
  • Brush
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Olive oil
  • Hooded dryer

Step 1: Separate your hair weave

First things first, you need to separate your hair weave. Separate hair into 4 portions, coil each of them into a bun and use clips to hold each of them in place.

Step 2: Shampoo your hair

It is advisable to wash and condition your sew-in once every three weeks. Look for a shampoo that is designed for sew-ins. To cleanse your scalp and hair, concentrate the shampoo on your scalp and massage it with the balls of your fingers. Then rinse the shampoo thoroughly to make sure that there are no traces of shampoo left on the hair.

When washing your hair under a sewn-in, you should run your fingers and hands from the roots of your hair to the tips of your sew-in weave. This will help remove any dirt and oil buildup from the scalp so that it can be easily removed.

Step 3: Moisturize your hair

Olive hair is a great hair moisturizer that mimics your hair’s natural oil secretion. Put a small amount of olive oil into a tiny container and dab your fingers in it. Then apply the olive oil carefully along each scalp part of your head. Dip your weave too in the olive solution. And then apply it on the scalp under each braid. It is crucial to moisturize your scalp to ensure that it gets the right moisture balance. Then rinse your hair.

Step 4: Condition your hair

Because your hair is protected underneath a sew-in doesn’t mean that you should skip conditioning it. A conditioner can help make it easier to detangle your extensions and keep your hair underneath hydrated.

Use a spray bottle/applicator bottle with diluted conditioner. Spray the bottle to apply the conditioner to your scalp. And then release the clips and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your weave. Let this solution rest on your hair for about 5 minutes, and then rinse your hair with warm water. Make sure that the conditioner is thoroughly rinsed.

Step 5: Wrap in a microfiber cloth

Soaking up excess water from your hair after a good wash is crucial, especially with a sewn-in. Wrap your hair in a microfiber cloth for about 20 minutes. The microfiber cloth is the best to use as it is gentle on your hair, unlike cotton towels.    They also get rid of excess moisture quickly and easily. In addition to that, they reduce frizz.

Step 6: Dry your hair

Finally, it is time to dry your hair. You can air-dry your hair. But if you don’t have the time to air dry your hair, you can use a hooded dryer to speed up the process. Apply some oil to your hair and style it as you wish.

Final thoughts

As you can see, it is pretty easy to wash your hair while wearing your favorite sew-in weave. Follow the steps mentioned above, and you will surely end up with a fresh-smelling and beautiful-looking weave.

Remember, proper care and maintenance of your sew-in-weave should be your ultimate goal. By following these tips and understanding what tools and products should and shouldn’t be used on certain hair types, you’ll ensure that your sew-in-weave looks well cared for and nobody will even know that it’s not your real hair!
